Clear Lens Extraction (CLE) is a surgery for those who cannot be treated with such vision correction surgeries as LASIK and LASEK. While LASIK changes the refractive power of the cornea, CLE changes the refractive power of the eye’s lens to improve one’s vision.
In other words, a natural lens in replaced with a new intraocular lens. During CLE, the natural lens is removed and replaced with an intraocular lens. Since the procedure is similar to the procedure for cataracts, CLE can be thought of as a safe established method with few side effects.
The purpose of CLE is to improve the vision of a person with extreme nearsightedness (myopia). It is important to decide the correct power of the intraocular lens to be implanted. The lens of the eye controls the degree of light refraction and thus the clarity of vision.
When you do close work, your natural lens bulges and to focus light and images on the retina. But a person who has been treated with CLE cannot control the shape of their implanted lens. A person, who has gone through CLE for sharper distance vision, may need reading glasses for close work (like reading).
Because of this, people who do close work frequently have an option to select an intraocular lens for near vision, and when required to do distant work, to wear glasses for the nearsighted. Or, multifocal intraocular lenses can be another option. One eye may be used for close work and the other is used for distant work (monovision). In that case, the eyes function less effectively for binocular vision.
A patient can select the corrective power of an intraocular lens, so it is necessary to consider his or her life and work styles and consult with a doctor. CLE is disadvantageous in that the intraocular lens has no control power, but this power naturally decreases in people over 40 years old. Thus, the surgery is, recommended more for individuals over 40.
For individuals under 40, implantable contact lens (ICL) surgery is advantageous in that an intraocular lens is implanted without removal of the natural lens, maintaining lens control for close work.
It is recommended to stop using contact lenses, 7 days for soft lens and 2 weeks for hard lenses. If this is impossible, please consult our medical staff.
On the day before operation, it is recommended to sleep well and avoid hard work.
On the day before operation, the antibiotic eye-drops given in advance should be applied to the eye 4 times (morning, afternoon, evening, before sleep) and 1 time on the day of the operation.
There is no food restriction before surgery but only skin facial moistures are allowed as make-up. It may be uncomfortable to take a shower after the operation, so wash in advance and visit hospital with comfortable clothing (Please avoid a turtle neck shirt, a shirt with a hood, fur garments, skirts, perfume, and sun screen cream)
Even though is possible to see blurry images, it is recommended to bring sun protection and a friend. Sunglasses and a hat are recommended.
